Termites are fast working and nearly impossible to detectable until it’s too late and they’ve made a significant impact on a structure. Termites cause a huge amount of damage to Australian homes each year not to mention the enormous cost home owners face with termite damage. This is why it is crucial to know what to look out for and how to detect if termites are in or around your house.
Termites can devour wood right until they reach the paint, and if you do experience this, its best to contact your closest pest control company and if you are in the North Brisbane region contact North Brisbane Pest Control, AMAC. It’s best if you don’t disturb the nest as you want them to stay where they are so you can then kill them rather than allowing them to scatter throughout the house.
Tunnels and Mud Leads
Termites make mud tunnels on the outside of a house structure and can be found on brickwork, walls, concrete posts, metal and other dense material structure. These tunnels are signs of termites climbing up a structure where it’s not easy for them to burrow through where they search for food and water. If you do see signs of tunnels it may indicate that your house is at risk of a termite infestation.
Make sure you look under your house or any other entry points which they may have climbed up over to get into the wood structure of your house.
Termite Droppings
Termite droppings also known as Frass are little piles of pellets which can look like sawdust on the floor. This is another indication that there may be termites present. The Drywood termites push the faecal pellets out of their nests and will make a viable pile on the floor or window sill.
Aborial Nests
Aborial nests are termite nests that look like tree growths also known as Aborial nests. Look out for these on trees in your backyard or in the neighbourhood, as this could be a sign of the existence of the main nest. These nests need to be treated by termite specialists to make sure they are killed and not spread.
Poor drainage
When it rains does water pool at the bottom or sides of your house? If so the wood inside may be damp or wet which gives termites an easy access point into your home. If wood is wet it allows the termites to more easily eat away the wood and enter your home.
Swarmers
The presence of swarming insects is usually the first sign of termites to the home owners which can occur both inside and out. Learn more about the different termite species.
Wings
Wings are discarded by swarmers, and are a normal part of their behaviour found around the home.
Damaged Wood
Damaged or brittle wood is a certain indicator that there are termites around and needs immediate attention by a termite expert. There are several termite detector devices that allow termite exterminators to check the activity level and moistness behind the wall. This allows termite experts to identify where the termite activity is and where the nest may be without damaging the walls.
